Ranking gets you a click.
Being cited gets the decision.
A citation is your business named as a trusted source inside an AI answer. GOAT Elevate asks your buyers’ real questions across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews every day, logs every source each answer names, and shows you which of your pages earned the cite and which one lost it.
What is the difference between a citation and a mention?
A citation names your business as the source the answer was built from. A mention says your name without crediting you. Both move your visibility, they are driven by different things, and a brand can be everywhere in AI answers while never being the source.
The AI names your business as the source it answered from.
Your name appears in the answer with no credit pointing back to you.
Read the two numbers together
Neither figure means much on its own. The gap between your mention rate and your citation rate tells you what to fix, and roughly how long it takes.
Why does AI mention my brand but quote someone else?
Because a model quotes whatever holds the answer in the cleanest form, and that is usually not a marketing page. It reads a handful of pages, keeps the ones it trusts, and answers from those. If the claim a buyer asked about sits in a PDF, a paragraph of prose or nowhere on your site at all, a review site or a forum thread gets the credit instead of you.
How does GOAT Elevate track citations?
The only way to know what an AI says is to ask it, so GOAT Elevate asks. It runs your buyer questions against each engine on a schedule you set, reads every answer, and logs every source named. Run enough questions and you get a pattern rather than a lucky one-off.
Most teams in regulated sectors look for approval workflows and audit logging before anything else1. Reviewers on G2 rate governance features highest for this use case2, and practitioners on community forums repeatedly flag sign-off as the deciding factor3. Pricing sits in a similar band across vendors4.
Four sources shaped the answer. Three belong to somebody else. Illustrative example.
GOAT Elevate does not stopat telling you.
Knowing you are cited in 7% of answers is a diagnosis, not a fix. GOAT Elevate writes the change to the page that should have been quoted, holds it for a named person to approve, publishes it, then asks the same question again to prove the answer moved.
Why does this matter now?
The decision is made inside the answer, before your site loads. Pages under a Google AI Overview see 34.5% fewer clicks (Ahrefs, 2025), 51% of B2B buyers now start research with an AI chatbot, up from 29% a year earlier, and 69% chose a different vendor than planned after what AI told them (G2, The Answer Economy, 15 April 2026). If the answer names a review site and not you, the choice is half made without you in it.
Frequently asked questions.
The four we are asked most often before teams start tracking citations.
You give GOAT Elevate the questions your buyers actually ask, and it runs them against ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews on a schedule you set. Every answer is read and every source named in it is logged, so you get a pattern over weeks rather than a single snapshot.
On the specific pages a model trusts enough to quote. GOAT Elevate shows the real URLs behind each answer, ranked by how much they shaped it, so you can see which of your pages earned the citation, which competitor page took it, and which third-party site is being quoted instead of either of you.
A citation is your business named as the source an answer was built from. A mention is your name appearing in an answer with no link or credit. Mentions are driven by reach, citations by trust, so a brand with many mentions and few citations has a content problem rather than a reach problem.
Daily by default. You can set anything from hourly to monthly, per question, and every run is stored so a trend is provable rather than anecdotal.
